Bachelor of Vocational Education

Whereas AB 1725 mandates a bachelor's degree for tenure, and

Whereas the ability to obtain a degree more advanced than the A.A. or A.S. degree is limited in some areas of the state by unavailability of classes,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges reaffirm its position as stated in Resolution 14.01 Spring 1988 to promote the availability of Bachelor of Vocational Education programs throughout the state.

Local Senates/Stafford Loan Program

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges provide sufficient information to local senates to effectively participate in the local decisions regarding participation in the Stafford Loan Program, and

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges alert local senates to be involved in the local decisions regarding participation in the Stafford Loan Program.

Master Plan

Whereas the California Community College system is unique in its commitment to an "open door" policy, and

Whereas there are many students who enroll for purposes other than vocational education and transfer, and

Whereas the importance or relevance of those purposes cannot be quantified, and

Whereas learning is a lifelong endeavor, especially given the complexities of a rapidly changing society and world,

Academic Accommodations for Disabled Students

Whereas new revisions to Title 5 require that each college district have in place a policy that will address academic accommodation for disabled students, and

Whereas academic accommodation for disabled students is clearly an academic and professional matter and is under the authority of local academic senates, and

Whereas faculty involvement in setting these policies and making decisions regarding academic accommodation of disabled students is critical,

Student on Board of Governors

Whereas students have not been represented on the Board of Governors for nearly a year, and

Whereas a student member on the Board of Governors is required by law, and

Whereas the student viewpoint and input at the state level is vital for the implementation of shared governance,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges urge the Governor to work with CalSACC to fill immediately the student position on the Board of Governors.

Student Fees

Whereas all community college students currently pay an enrollment fee of $6 per unit up to $60 a semester, and

Whereas proposed legislation would limit enrollment of some students by requiring those with a large number of units or a Bachelor's degree to pay differential fees, and

Whereas many students return to community colleges for retraining, upgrading of skills and continuing education needed to obtain or maintain employment, and

Whereas a well educated work force is necessary for the economic growth and stability of California, and

Student Equity Plans

Whereas the adoption of the Student Equity Policy by the Board of Governors appears imminent, and

Whereas local districts need specific, practical examples to develop and implement local student equity plans for each college, and

Whereas the time frame anticipated for response is short,

Student Equity Proposal Amendment

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges direct the Executive Committee to seek to amend line 266 of the Student Equity Proposal to read:Programs that encourage, recognize, and reward faculty who take additional courses which would have the probability of increasing their understanding and sensitivity to cultural diversity (such as gender studies; racial, ethnic, and religious studies; nonwestern cultures, etc.) or in ...
