Studies show that the digital divide impacts low-income neighborhoods and community college students.  Across the state, many CCCs are rolling out information technology (IT) initiatives that challenge our students' digital literacy fluency, including Microsoft Office 365, student email, multi-factor authentication, and campus WiFi.

Dr. Ingrid Greenberg is the Academic Senate Past President and Coordinator, Online Faculty Mentor Team, at San Diego College of Continuing Education, and a ASCCC Faculty Leadership Development Committee member. She will present emerging best practices for equitable student access and success for IT initiatives. The presenter will discuss shared governance and leadership topics, including the role of the local Academic Senate, collaboration with district and college leaders, and partnerships with community agencies. Additionally, she will show the effectiveness of practical solutions such as student-centered tutorials and faculty mentors for increasing student equity, access, and success when using IT tools.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify three digital divide issues impacting college students
  • Identify four steps local Academic Senate leadership can take to address Student Digital Equity and Literacy
  • Describe two practical solutions SDCCE has taken to address Student Digital Equity and Literacy
  • Find two data sources that shows the effectiveness of supporting Student Digital Equity and Literacy
